“Uber”: Definition is “an extreme example”

An Uber driver picked us up right on time in Manhattan last evening during a thunderstorm. Another was waiting for us outside the theater on time when a dozen theaters were emptying on to the streets. Every Uber driver we’ve used in New York City on this trip has been polite, on time, and a recent immigrant with imperfect English. They seem to enjoy the work and are good at it. The one time I had to catch a cab, that driver was polite (and spoke with an accent), the cab was spotless, and there was a credit card machine in front of me. That transition has been the result of Uber competition.
