Building Community

Building Community

Do you know what perpetuates communities? It’s evangelism. You need people who attract other people. I call this “The chain reaction of attraction®.”

Communities enable you to gain credit for bringing people together who otherwise wouldn’t know each other, irrespective of whether you are actually present. As you read this, AlansForums.com is in full swing, 24/7/365, with people from scores of countries communicating about marketing, innovation, life balance, politics, and so forth.

But communities have to be real as well as virtual. People have to be able to meet in person, which is now going to be possible again after a relatively brief hiatus. People belong to communities because they share the values, crave kindred spirits in lonely professions/positions, and appreciate unique value.

“Community” can be defined as “a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.”

“Tribes” and be defined as “a social division in a traditional society, consisting of families or communities linked by social, economic, religious, or blood ties, with a common culture and dialect, typically having a recognized leader.”

I find “tribalism” pejorative and exclusionary. I find “community” as positive and inclusive.

Don’t just “collect” clients. Build your community.
