Alan Weiss's Monday Morning Memo

Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 08/23/2021

I was riding the waves in Nantucket as I always do. This time, when I returned to the beach, both my legs had a strong tingling sensation. I took a few seconds, it didn’t go away, there was nothing visible, but I said to myself, “Jellyfish.”

I walked up to the house where my son was having lunch. I said, “Jason, take out your phone and look up the treatment of jellyfish stings.” He ran down the list in 30 seconds. My symptoms didn’t require emergency medical treatment (nausea and vomiting would have, and no tentacles were on my skin) but the site advised NOT to wipe the area with a towel (I had on the beach) and not to rinse with cold water (I had before entering the house). It did advise: Soak for 20 minutes in hot water and the symptoms should disappear.

We both headed for the jacuzzi, uncovered it, and fired it up. The heat felt great and—drum roll—after 20 minutes the tingling was gone. I was left with some crazy little bumps like insect bites, and I’m treating them with a product designed for such things.

What’s the lesson here? I didn’t decide to “wait and see” or “soldier through.” I took action. (A woman once told me I was a “whiner” because I sought medical attention at times!) I had access to immediate, informed help, even if my son weren’t there. And I had access to an effective remedy, even though I had done intuitive but incorrect things first.

Think about that the next time your business is down, or a relationship seems to sour, or your personal plans fail. I’m reminded of the old Newhart routine where’s he’s an airline captain announcing that the flight is three hours ahead of schedule, and they’ll soon be landing in either Montreal or Buenos Aires. Moving faster on the wrong course isn’t progress.

In order to succeed, people need a sense of self-efficacy, to struggle together with resilience to meet the inevitable obstacles and inequities of life. —Albert Bandura (recently deceased, the “rock star of psychology” in my book)

Resilience is all about being able to overcome the unexpected. Sustainability is about survival. The goal of resilience is to thrive. —Jamais Cascio
