Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 10/02/2023
I’m an optimistic guy. I was pretty confident that there would be an agreement to fund the government without a shutdown. It was simply pragmatic politics: Who wants to be blamed for millions of workers not getting paid while Congress continues to collect six-figure salaries? The next election is nigh.
But here’s what worries me, and this is nonpartisan, simply the facts as I see them.
We are not replacing ourselves in the US (or in most industrialized countries). This isn’t going to change in the next generation or so. Dual income families, affluence and the decision not to have children or to have only one child, high home prices and mortgage rates and so on contribute to this clear and threatening trend. (Some people have told me they’re not about to bring a child into contemporary society.)
This means we need an intelligent immigration policy, intelligent development and use of technology, and an embrace of all sources of talent and skill: no matter what age, gender, ethnicity, religion, background, or politics. Our focus needs to be on STEM studies, consensus building, and our nation’s self-interests, not whether we need to label the rest rooms “neutral gender faculty only” in the schools, or what flags and signs should be permitted on people’s lawns or public buildings.
Our focus today is on a congeries of personal and group grievances and complaints. We need to stop removing statues and start renewing values, stop taking names off of schools and start putting education and free speech back into them.
We need to choose talent, not “identity” or we’ll forever be trying to choose pronouns but won’t be able to choose how to perpetuate our standard of living—and giving.
I’m an optimistic guy, but I’m also a realist. And the only person it seems we can really depend on to perform right now is….Taylor Swift. She, of course, controls her own destiny. We had better begin controlling ours.
