And Now A Little Test

And Now A Little Test

Once we “label” people we don’t really understand them better, we simply “explain them away.” What do you expect from an INTJ, or a “high D” or a blue regressive retentive? Even the more valid tests (which DISC and Meyers Briggs are not, in my view) were designed for other purposes. The Minnesota Multiphasic is commonly used in diagnosing mental health disorders but it was originally constructed merely to see if men were fit to serve in the army in the 1940s. It was an “on/off” switch, not a rheostat to diagnose degrees or types of illness at the time.

Even labels such as “introvert/extrovert” are deceptive in that these traits are really on a continuum which we move along, given circumstances and other people.

When we find blame, instead of cause, for a problem, we think we’ve solved it and walk away with the problem still intact. When we label people as a result of some “test” we simply think we understand them and walk away with poor relationships and poor communications still intact.

Don’t assume someone is somehow “damaged” or in a certain fixed “box” because a notoriously unreliable, forced-choice test puts a label on them. I’m assuming you’re not damaged, and will at least consider this.
