Have I Told You Lately How Good You Look?

If you want to get someone’s attention, compliment them! When I tell a reporter in any major publication that I enjoyed the article and wanted to suggest something, I’ll get a response 90% of the time. When I tell a restaurant manger or owner that the food is fantastic, and then ask for a favor, it’s almost always granted (whether a special meal preparation or a gift certificate for charity).

The same dynamic applies with clients and prospects. Don’t open a discussion saying, “Your web site could be making a much better impressions if you changed….” but rather, “Your web site is very clearly done. Have you considered adding….?”

    Such a great point. I was once looking for a new website designer and asked one candidate to take a look at my current site. I asked, what he thought was good and worth keeping and what needed to be changed. He replied, “The whole thing is terrible.” I knew the site needed to be updated (otherwise I wouldn’t have been looking for a designer) but the current site had been quite successful for my business. Time to move on to the next candidate. I figured if that was how our relationship was going to begin, imagine how it would be as we worked together.
