In the early 70s and before, you were allowed membership in elite airline clubs and lounges only by invitation, because you were a good customer. In Pan Am's Clipper Clubs, you needed a jacket to get in, but they kept blazers on supply for you if you weren't wearing a jacket. Then someone sued (of course) and anyone could join by simply paying the bill. Now the clubs are so filled because of credit card promotions as well as people using frequent flyer points for membership, that the clubs are filled and the concourses are quieter. The airlines' and credit card companies' response: create elite levels, and raise prices.

Of course, I'm waiting for someone to sue….
