The Melbourne Myopic: Dumb Ass Stupid People

The Melbourne Myopic: Dumb Ass Stupid People

A guy named Bill in Melbourne tells me he likes Monday Morning Memo, and would love to hear me in person. I tell him I have good news in that I’m running the Million Dollar Consulting® Convention in March in Sydney.

He writes back a long diatribe about Melbourne being far superior and that I should change the location. He’s certainly not going to Sydney (an hour or so by plane) and leaving Melbourne. This goes on for paragraphs, pontificating to me about my bad decision and the superiority of Melbourne.

I tell him that this will be my 19th trip to Australia and although I may not know it as well as Australians (on the other hand, very few real New Yorkers have been to the Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty), my Australian feedback was in favor of Sydney. I also tell him I love Melbourne, but I don’t believe you elevate one city by denigrating another, and that he needs to get out more.

He, of course, writes back and tells me I’m arrogant, and launches an ad hominem attack. He reminds me of a Woody Allen observation: “A narcissist is someone better looking than you are.” Arrogance comes from those smarter, more worldly, and more inclusive than you are, Bill. I’m proud to be a globalist, but people like this are just feathering their nest.

He’ll no doubt unsubscribe from my free newsletter because he’s been told he’s wrong. That threatens the nest.
