The Third Side

The Third Side

There are three sides (at least) to every story or issue. There’s one person’s or group’s position, and an “opposing” person’s or group’s position, and then there’s the objective truth.

Don’t take sides, seek the truth. That’s why we’re valuable as independent consultants and counselors. The media, the schools, politicians, have all pretty much given up on finding the truth. (They are called “courts of law” not “courts of justice.”)

Look for observed behavior and empirical evidence. If you don’t and merely take sides (even if it’s your buyer) you lose all credibility and value. And it will be as obvious as a ham sandwich.

    Dear Alan

You refer to the Third Side being the ‘objective truth’. ‘Objective truth’ is in my view a contestable concept. Acknowledging that you go on to refer to observed behavior and empirical evidence each are subject to various kinds of bias that will skew the outcome. The search for an objective position on any contested matter will always be better understood through a careful examination of the biases at work in the observation of behaviours and the collection of empirical evidence.
