Here’s my take on the Olympics thus far.
I love to watch people compete. I doubt a hundredth of a second or a questionable penalty really decides who’s “best” in the world, but so be it. While the Olympics are about the purity of sports, they meticulously count the medals by country and play national anthems for each winner.
If this were a private, for-profit company and not a country, Japan would be condemned for recklessness and endangering public health. In addition to its staggeringly low vaccination rate, the US contingent has over 100 athletes who have refused vaccination (about one-sixth of the contingent), and Covid cases are rising daily, eliminating some top competitors. The Olympics should have been canceled or delayed. Japanese Olympic officials have been fired for sexual harassment and one for making “Holocaust jokes” many years ago.
The current games are all about television and revenues. I find it’s like watching action on a petri dish.
The Norwegian women’s handball team (I can’t even imagine the sport) was fined because their uniforms weren’t skimpy enough! Which leads me to point out that women’s beach volleyball would have a huge dropoff in attendance if the athletes wore more practical shorts and tank tops instead of tiny bikinis. Where is #metoo now?
I’m recording the Olympics and fast-forwarding to the finals and highlights. It seems to me this is about as “amateur” a competition as an NFL football game. These are all “pros” who are funded and dedicate all their time to competing.
Is handball like curling? Both of these these sports are impalpable.
If the Olympic Games ever served a true altruistic purpose, they have long since outlived it. Yeah, the pursuit of athletic excellence, sportsmanship and international goodwill is plenty noble. But the modern Olympics are at best a vehicle for agitprop; at worst, a scandal magnet. —John Ridley
Darts should definitely be in the Olympic Games. Can you tell me any difference between archery and darts or shooting and darts? It’s a very similar concept and both of those are in the Olympic Games. And don’t forget that darts is also a hugely popular sport. —Adrian Lewis
(Alan’s note: If you can have 3-on-3 basketball, handball, badminton, golf, and they’re considering rock-climbing, you can certainly have darts, during which particpants can also drink beer.)
