Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 08/08/2022

Alan Weiss's Monday Morning Memo

Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 08/08/2022

Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) is an impulse-control disorder. You can recognize it by sudden episodes of unwarranted anger. People with IED experience “explosions” of anger with minor issues or with no provocation at all.

“Normal” anger is healthy. We all become angry when someone hurts us, or we make a bad mistake, or we’re “unlucky.” But most of us act rationally in these conditions. We may bemoan our fate, use a sailor’s profanity, or throw something against a wall. But we regain our senses and recover.

We can express anger rationally and not with hostility, or we can suppress it, trying to think of happier things and ignore the cause of the anger. But this latter path often leads to stress or less healthy forms of expressing unhappiness, such as passive aggressive behavior which seeks to subtly hurt others.

Recently, a man wrote me, furious with a format error in Monday Morning Memo, telling me I had “no credibility” and it was horrible that I never proofed the issue. It turned out, of course, that the problem was on his end! But instead of saying, “Alan, I think you might want to see if others experienced a problem I’m having….” he simply went ballistic. This is IED.

IED can be managed successfully with therapy and discipline. And once the “explosion” occurs, individuals report they feel far better after the pressure is released. But that doesn’t cure the problem, which I think lies in self-anger.

We all get angry. But if your reaction is completely out of proportion to the context and degree of “hurt,” find out what’s really bothering you. Or, help those family members or friends find out what’s really bothering them.

Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned. —Buddha

Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent. —Isaac Asimov

When you are offended at any man’s fault, turn to yourself and study your own failings. Then you will forget your anger. —Epictetus

The beach houses in the winter are fantastic. There’s a great holiday atmosphere that time of year. It will be on my site next week. I’ll be focusing on what I’ve seen as the critical areas for success: brand-building, accelerating referrals, provocative IP, low labor revenue focus, the post-pandemic lasting realities, and so forth.

The fee is $15,000, which includes lodging, breakfast, lunch, breaks, and one dinner. If you catch me at the bar, it could include two dinners. I’m also going to take time to show how I create this and other workshops, step by step, live or remote.
