Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 8/28/2023
Many years ago I was asked to consult with the commanding officers of Clark Air Base in the Philippines. It was there that a colonel explained what the difference was between “efficient” and “effective.
“If you want us to destroy a city,” he said matter-of-factly, “and we think it requires a hundred planes, to be efficient means we’ll send a hundred planes. But if you want us to be effective, we’ll send two hundred planes.” He scared the hell out of me. Picture Jack Nicholson in “A Few Good Men.”
In any case, the big problem was FOD (foreign object damage) that was causing huge engine malfunctions in jet fighters which, in today’s money, cost $22 million each. I wandered around the hangars, and found that the floors were littered with bolts and nuts and screws, as if a hardware store had blown up. The enlisted men were chatting and there were no non-commissioned officers around.
I told the colonel to police the hangars, using sergeants on site to ensure that the enlisted men were thoroughly cleaning the floors, and not to remove the engine covers until the planes were towed out of the hangar. They were currently removed before towing, while in the hangars. The FOD disappeared. (This is why I made the big bucks.)
Today, I observe that we have FUD: fear, uncertainty and doubt. People are hesitant to act, to take risks, to commit themselves. They feel powerless and are drowned by the media and various causes and agendas, all with constant bad news and blame.
Clean up all the garbage and detritus that’s on the floor of your life. Hold your head up and look to the future. The damage, the FUD, is not inevitable or insoluble. Take command of your life and destiny.
There’s nothing you can’t overcome to takeoff and soar.
