Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 4/17/2023
I’m currently banned from LinkedIn for “violating their code of conduct.” They haven’t mentioned what this violation was, they claimed that they doubt I’m really me, and after submitting a passport photo they banned me! (I know I take a lousy photo, but still….) My technical people are having a hard time talking to a human, and they finally complained on Twitter which produced a reply to me on Instagram!
I am not making this up.
But imagine the businesses, events, and reputations ruined by these cavalier acts due to incorrect algorithms and/or human error by poorly trained personnel. I’ve received scores of letters from people banned without explanation for a year, months, weeks, and days. I don’t need LinkedIn, so let me assure you that I’m alive and well and you’ll see me here every Monday (along with my five other columns, two video series, podcasts, yada yada, yada).
We are eroding a once-deeply-held value: Innocent until proved guilty. And while I’ll readily admit we’re not perfect in our history with this belief, having suffered bias and racism and cravenness (remember the now-disbarred district attorney who tried to frame the Duke lacrosse players), we have tried to adhere to it as best we can. But Big Brother looms.
TSA is a multi-billion dollar effort to force us to prove our innocence through the embarrassment of body searches, luggage contents exposed, and questioning. Yet we have Global Entry that, with a retinal and fingerprint scan, can whisk you into the country in one minute. Why can’t we use the same background checks and interviews to qualify for leaving on an airplane expeditiously?
I wrote in my blog today that the greatest threat to airline travel—with 2,500 incidents in 2022 and $8.5 million in recommended fines—is unruly passengers in flight.
Maybe they’re unruly from having to prove their innocence at least once and sometimes more every day when they fly.
And maybe the social media platforms ought to be treated as public utilities and regulated so that they can’t arbitrarily censor and distort and exile people. I could easily become “unruly” with a LinkedIn executive right now, assuming there are any humans in the place.
