Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 8/21/2023
(My internet is down as I’m writing this, so please be patient with any errors or lateness.)
“Elasticity” it the ability of something to resume its normal shape after being stretched out of that shape. We can also call it “adaptability.”
And I have news for you, time has elasticity.
I coach a great many clients via Zoom globally. I have the link ready on my computer, but I keep my eye on the clock in the upper right corner of my screen, and don’t open the link until the exact time. And I’ve found in those last two-to-four minutes, I can get a lot done besides just sitting there waiting for the countdown.
I can pay a few bills, write a blog post, respond to a couple of emails, read an article, create a podcast topic. This, of course, applies to larger time frames, as well. I can read part of a book while waiting on “hold,” or run outside and check the pool if I have five minutes.
Now, I have nothing against your simply sitting and waiting, daydreaming or napping. I’m not insisting that you be constantly busy. But I think you can see that you can’t allow people to seek—and gain—“an hour of your time,” or commit to time frames which the other parties feel obligated to fill. “Well, we’ve finished early, what else would you like to talk about?” (“I’d like to talk about getting the hell out of here.”)
And, of course, we need to be brief, to eschew redundancy, verbosity, pleonasm.
